Virginia Ethel Emanuel

Virginia Ethel Emanuel was born in 1906 in New York. She was the daughter of Walter Emanuel and Esther “Estelle” Weil. Her parents had married in 1905, a year before Virginia was born.

It is said that Virginia’s mother was an opera singer, however in the 1910 census her occupation is listed as “none” and I can not find any information of any opera singer named “Estelle Emanuel”…

Here is the 1910 census information for Virginia and her family:

In 1912, little Virginia was in London with her mother. They had travelled to Piccadilly because Estelle had signed a work contract there.

Virginia’s mother sent her daughter back to New York with her nursemaid, Miss Elizabeth Dowdell. They boarded the Titanic on 10th April 1912 in Southampton.

Elizabeth and Virginia shared a cabin with Amy Stanley.

Virginia was rescued from the sinking and was cared for on the Carpathia by Miss Dowdell.

In New York she was met by her grandparents, and taken to their house where they cared for her.
