Frederick William Pengelly was born on 27 September 1892, the son of William John Courtis Pengelly and his wife Sarah Jane (nee Eva).
Frederick was baptised at St. Annes in Gunnislake, Cornwall on 2 December 1892. His family were living at Green Hill Bridge, Gunnislake. Frederick was the first of four children born to William and Sarah. His siblings were William James, Lilian Beatrice and Russell Charles Pengelly.

Frederick's father, William died in 1901, leaving Sarah Jane to raise four young children. In 1904 she married George Reynolds.
In 1911, George Emigrated to America. He boarded the Philadelphia in Southampton and arrived in New York on 6 May 1911. His destination was Rhode Island.
In April of 1912, young Frederick decided that he too would emigrate to America. He was probably going to join his step father, and help to earn money for his mother and siblings back home. On 10 April 1912, Frederick boarded the Titanic at Southampton. He never made it to America, he died int he sinking just 20 years old.
On 18 April 1912, the Western Morning News made a mention of Frederick in the following report
"...Frederick Pengelly is 21 years of age, his mother resides at Green Hill, Gunnislake. His step-father, Mr G Reynolds, is in America."
